There are many threats to bats, such as:
- White-nose Syndrome
- Habitat loss
- Wind energy turbines
White- nose Syndrome
White-nose Syndrome is a fungus that grows on the noses of bats and has killed millions of bats all around America. White-nose syndrome (WNS) is spread by bats communicating. A bat who has White-nose stays in the same place as other bats. These other bats are now contaminated with White-nose Syndrome. White-nose only grows in the cold, so once the bats migrate to their winter caves, it starts growing on them, and they eventually die. Humans spread it, by visiting bat caves. WNS kills bats by waking them up in the winter which wastes their limited fat. Sadly, so far, there is no cure for this problem. To learn more about white-nose syndrome click on the sites below:
Bats live in dead trees. When us humans cut them down they no longer have their house. For this, we luckily have a solution. To help, bats you can build a bat house. For more information on a bat house go to our post about bat houses.
Wind Energy Turbines
Scientists have known for a long time that Wind Energy Turbines are bigger to bats than to birds. Many bats have been killed by Wind Energy Turbines. Unfortunately, there’s no way to fix this other than getting rid of Wind Turbines. To learn more click on the website below: http://www.popsci.com/
